New to Java

Hello

I was just wondering if game programming is best suited to java or c++>?
I am under the impession that most games are made in C++ but does java have the same potential. For example could you make games like doom,gears of war, resident evi etc. Games with good grapics and game play etc in java?

This is just a question not actual trying to learn how to do it.
