Java Plug-in not installed with SDK 1.4.2

I have installed SDK 1.4.2, but Internet Explorer 6 seems totally oblivious to this fact. I see no sign of the Java Plug-in anywhere I look, including the Control Panel and the Internet Options, and applets certainly do not run from the browser. There is no Java Plug-in icon in the Control Panel, no Java icon in the system tray. I can compile and run applications, so I do have the SDK. I just need to make the rest of my computer realize it. There must be some way to install the Plug-in manually, since I must physically have it, right? I was very surprised to discover that there doesn't seem to be anything about installing plug-ins in Internet Options.

My OS is Windows XP version 5.1 service pack 2.
