Java Installation - HELP!

I'm getting started with Java. I've installed the development kit, jdk-1_5_0_08-windows-i568-p-iftw, setup Luncher, almost 50MB, and I don't know how I can get started with programming. When I double click the icon, it wants to install it again.
Do I need to install something else?
