Java Game Programming

843799Sep 15 2009 — edited Oct 3 2009
Hello, I'm using a Macbook for my programming purposes with the intent of being able to program simple 2d and 3d games eventually, though right now I'm still in the process of learning and I consider myself a beginner. I was wondering if it's possible just using Java and its libraries to construct a game up to the level of graphics and gameplay as a Nintendo 64 game, as this is where I'd most like to be headed. If this is not possible just using Java, I would very much like to know what tools and skills I will need to get to that point. Right now, my eyes are set on building my skills up from the bottom, starting with Atari 2600 quality games up to Nintendo, then Super Nintendo, then finally up to primitive 3d games until I can rival the Nintendo 64. Granted, this is a tough challenge, but it's what motivates me to program and to learn Java and C++. If anyone could tell me whether Java is sufficient or whether I would need more, taking into consideration that I'm using Mac OS X as my system of development, I would most appreciate it. Thanks in advance. :]
