java application to monitor laptop battery levels

hello as the title suggests i have been given a task to create a java application to monitor laptop battery levels.. i have no idea where to start. did a couple of google searches but no help. you can find products on the net for sale but i have to create it in java code. anyone with ideas pls help.. thanks
