Java 7 Browser Plugin Causing Firefox to Crash on Windows

This is happening on many of our machines. With Java 7 (JRE) 32bit installed, Firefox crashes/hangs when ever a page with a Java applet is loaded. The crash itself seems to be happening when the browser plugin is getting initialized, but before the applet itself is started. If I downgrade to 6u29, every thing works fine. Tested with Firefox 3.6, 5 and 12.

In fact, even IE occasionally hangs when loading applets with Java 7

Is there any know issue of this sort for Java 7 releases or is it some sort of configuration/installation issue?
