Java 1.4.x hangs

At some point after upgrading to Netscape 7.01, I have discovered that Java programs hang when run...not only in the browser but even when running the "Java Web Start" program (when I select any menu item it hangs), and also when opening the Java control panel. The task JAVAW.EXE is left running in memory. I have tried uninstalling Java 2 1.3.1 (left over from Netscape 6) and uninstalling all Java versions and installing the latest Java 2 1.4.1 from Sun's site, to no avail. Any hints? I have Windows 2000 Pro SP2 on this PC.
