J2SE 5.0 problem installation

I am very new to java technology. I wish you can help me on the problem I am encountering right now. I have installed a J2se 5.0 on my computer. After its installation I tried to run an application program using the Application Cache Viewer of the java webstart. But everytime I execute the application it would only load the java console for a short time then disappear again without lunching the application that I needed to run. The worst thing about it is there is no error provide on the java console log.
The application program was created on a 1.5 version of java which its runtime environment is available on J2SE. But how come my application is not running? Do I need to install an old version J2RE 1.4 first before installing the J2SE5.0? Am I still missing something on my installation of the J2SE?
