Isql*plus help!

Hi,
Hope someone can help. I have recently started learning sql, so downloaded the 10g express addition. However, I have started through the Oracle course work and when I try to run the &substitution variable the sql*plus is basically not recognising the command (is this a none issue or is there an update). The course notes all relate to iSQL*Plus, so is there anyway I can use that browser and if so what version of 10g do I need to download.
