Is Tomcat is Web server or Application Server ?

Hello Friends . please clarify this small doubt which is confusing me a lot.
Tomcat 5.0.28 is a web server or application server.
If Tomcat is a web server then what is Apache Http server which serves the requests belong to static pages.
what is apache server and tomcat server ?
up to my knowledge . a web server provides less features than an application server. An application server supports EJB container where a web server not. can we add application server capabilities to a web server ?

please provide me a detailed clarification . thanks in advance.
