Is there issues with SID > 8 char

emersoklAug 6 2009 — edited Aug 6 2009
Thanks for taking my questins!!

Can anyone give me any advice why I might not want to create a database with a sid > than the recommended 8 characters? We are moving to 11g (windows 2008). Currently we are 10g (windows 2003).

Background:
We are moving our Data Warehouse server to a new box. The Data Warehouse Admin wants the sid to remain the same but the sid is 9 characters in legnth. I don't have a ton of experience with oracle and when I requested we change the name to 8 or less charaters they said it would be too big of a change for them and then assured me that other more experienced DBAs have said not to worry. On their behalf we have been running with a 9 character sid for serveral years on 10g with no issues that I am aware of.

*The only problem I can find on the old system and the new system is that any oradata folder has the sid name truncated to 8 characters.

Any other issues I should be concerned about?

Thanks,
Kle
