Is Symantec backup a substitute for RMAN

975148Jun 16 2015 — edited Jun 18 2015

We have Oracle 11g database in our production environment on RHEL 5.8 Virtual machine using VMware. The database version is 11.2.0.3.0.

1) We have backup of the virtual machine configured using Symantec with full backup on Monday and Friday and incremental backup on Tuesday-Thursday.

2) We have our RMAN backups also in place configured as incremental 0 backups on Sunday & Wednesday and incremental level 1 backups on the other days. Archive log backups are configured to be taken daily.

My query is that whether we can discontinue the RMAN backup and rely on the Symantec backup taken for the VM? Would RMAN understand the Symantec backup if in an eventuality, restore of the database is required.

I hope my query is clear if Symantec backup can be a substitute for RMAN.

Requesting a reply.
