Is Oracle Application Server == Weblogic Server ???

KnightbeatFeb 7 2011 — edited Feb 10 2011
After almost 2 struggling years, I could persuade our management to move to Oracle servers from IBM websphere server. With the advantages I highlighted in the final discussion, they agreed to chose Oracle as the future of our Bank. ( Currently we use Oracle 10g database and Warehouse builder, but not any other products ). As the conclusion of the meeting Oracle Weblogic server was suggested to be purchased.

Reasons:

1. IBM enterprise support was failed to set up our development environment to use JSF2.0 without any problem.
2. IBM charges a big amount of money for RAD licenses ( Which is the only IDE that can be used to develop applications for Websphere server )
3. Since they don't offer any express (free) edition of those tools, we are unable to proceed with R&D. ( we are restricted )

1. Since J Developer is free and also Netbeans supports Weblogic server, we will not have restrictions on using those IDE tools. ( reduce the cost )
2. Since Netbeans IDE is upgraded frequently with the latest technology, we will not be restricted to any specified technology or it's version
3. Personally, I believe that Oracle community forum support also much richer than IBMs paid enterprise support. ( I had to wait almost 3 and 1/2 months to get the first answer for a question regarding changing IBM WAS 7 server's class loader policy. But I have never waited on this Oracle community forum more than 5 minutes or a few browser refreshes for any of my questions ).

Because of these reasons and some more few reasons, our management decided to move to Oracle weblogic server. For the time being I am the only Oracle fan in our Sampath Bank (Sri Lanka) IT department, I was struggling to make them taking this decision for such a long time. I introduced Oracle tools such as SQL developer & Data modeler to our team members and discouraged them using any other 3rd party tools ( including cracked software, which we are not allowed to use). So now I am happy since everything I did has not been for nothing, and has become fruitful, eventually.

But I still don't have any idea whether Oracle Application Server and Oracle Weblogic Server are the same or different servers. So please help me to get confirmed this, and I appreciate if you can tell me what are the differences between these two (if these two names don't represent the same server).

Thank you.
