is hsqldb any good?

I need a good free open source DB to use for my system. i have seem something about hsqldb posted. what are some other good suggestions/ideas?

thanks guys

i will mainly be storing encrypted data (byte[]) and strings, so the data isn't to extensive

i jsut need a better solution to writing my own data store
