Is a separate loopback adaptor needed on a laptop?

davidp 2Oct 17 2013 — edited Oct 18 2013

I've installed Oracle on laptops with DHCP IP addresses several times and always followed the instructions to add a loopback adaptor Oracle Database Preinstallation Requirements

I'm wondering whether this is really needed on modern Windows 7 laptops ? Can I just set ORACLE_HOSTNAME=localhost and have everything work?

I'm installing Oracle Server 11.2.0.3 Standard Edition.

ping localhost works with all the networks unplugged and wireless off, so there seems to be a loopback service installed by Windows 7.

Thanks.
