Intall JDK or JRM

while trying to install a search engine software lexst-sea [search engine software lexst-sea|http://www.lexst.com] , the manual says, users must install JDK6.0 not only JRE.

I am not a java guy, my question is: why must i install jdk ? will it make the server slower ? (It's a software to be installed on web server).
