Installing OracleXE 10g has damaged my pre-existing TNS setup?

I have an odd problem in that I have recently installed OracleXE 10g onto a laptop that already had 4 defined and working TNS names for Oracle9i instances. I find now that:
My query tool (Golden32 by Benthic Software) cannot use its cached connection specifiers: They result in "CONNECT: TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified"
My schema comparer (TOYS) also cannot connect to the cached connection info it holds, that was working fine before the install
My visual studio CAN carry on using its existing declared connections no problems
Oracle Net Manager has no problems conencting to the named instances
-
Oddly enough, the OracleXE instance has no TNS entry and can be connected to just by specifying "localhost" as the TNS name
-
Stopping the OracleXE and OracleXETNSListener services has no effect.
ANy advice would be greatly appreciated
