Installation Solaris 9 on IBM Laptop R30 Pentium III
Hi there,
I 'm a new kid in a block with Solaris OS and have tried to install the OS on my laptop so that I can learn
more about Sun Unix and J2EE so that it can make my working life more exciting:
My systems:
1) Pentium III Intel SpeedStep 1.0 GHZ
1) Barebone XP home edition.
2) 1 Partition NSFT for XP and 1 hidden partition that captured IBM recovery software. Using Partition Magic 8.0 I created an partition(14 gigs) dedicated for my new Solaris OS since I want both OS on my laptop because of my job requirements.
3) The Laptop can have only one external media type at a time ie. I can have either my DVD rom or Floppy drive attached to the laptop one at a time.
4) There 's no serial port on the laptop, and serial port is disable in the laptop configuration as a result.
5) I have 376 Megs of memory.
6) The Laptop has built-in Wireless and infared port that have been disable
7) Bios version 1.38(1CETE8WW).
What I have done for the installation :
1) Confirm in the HDCL list to ensure my LAPTOP is compatible (Yes. Hooray it 's on the list)
2) Downloaded
Solaris 9 x86 Installation CD sol-7-u3-install-x86,
Solaris 9 x86 software 1 of 2 CD sol-9-u7-x86-v1 and
Solaris 9 x86 software 2 of 2 CD sol-9-u7-x86-v2.
So as instructed I burned the images of X86-V1 and X86V2 to the CD and started to do my installation.
3) I started with X86-V1 thru my DVD rom, and Yes my baby it booted with Sun OS, it stalled at Solaris device configuration when I hit F2 key.
4) I went through the on-line help screen to do the specific scan(F3). I chose everything except for the serial port scan. But it stalled again at Symbios 8XX Hi-performance SCSI HBA. As instructed, I took the Symbios off the list, but it stalled again at System keyboard. So I took both Symbios and System, the system stalled at a quote and heart shape characters.
Please help me to install this OS on my machine since I want to go back and do things in UNIX as I used to do when I was at college.
Thanking advance for your feedback.
Regards,
H.D.
