installation fails

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2..
I downloaded the OracleXE.exe and installed. After accepting all of the defaults during the installation process, I could not access apex homepage. So I deinstalled XE and reinstalled it. Now I could see the login site, but login with correct user/passwort failed: site not found. So I tried several times to deinstall and install oraclexe, all without success. Once the computer 'hang' during installation, now I get the following errors:

Error 1901. Error attempting to read from the source installation database: c:\windows\installer\1611ea.msi

The next time the file name changed to 11a42af.msi, then 11a42bc.msi, so it appears to change each time I try it. When I cancel I get:

Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation. Consult windows installer help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information

Could anyone give a solution to this problem
