Install software, patches, and CPU patches before performing 11g upgrade ??

I have a single x386 server Linux Redhat installation with one Oracle 10g Rel 2 instance. I am prepping to upgrade to Oracle 11g Rel 2. The Upgrade Guide (11g R2) says install software, latest patchset, and CPU patch before performing the actual upgrade. The 11g JulCPU2010 patch instructions imply changes will be made to the instance as well as the 11g software files. And of course there are post 11g CPU patch SQL operations to perform on my 10g instance. Is applying the CPU patch before upgrading to 11g correct? Appreciate any help. Thanks.
