Install Error 1722 in jdk-1_5_0_01-windows-i586-p.exe: SUN address this?

I have been attempting to install SDK 5 with no success.
I am running Win98SE AMD K2-6 380MHZ.
This 1722 install error appears to be a known problem, SUN offered a work around for j2re-1_4_2_xx-windows-i586-p.exe located at,
Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.

Therefore, it appears that this problem is ongoing. I wanted to install JDK 5 since it was suppose to replace SDK 1.4. I had SDK 1.4 on the computer and had installed it previously with no problem.
Now, if I am correct. If I install JDK 5 by itself, it will also install J2RE 5 at the same time Then, I do not have to install J2RE 5 separately? Is that correct??
I had attempted to install J2RE 5 but I got the same "1722" error message. I was able to get around the problem by following the suggestions in the link above for J2RE 1.4. The directory name change did not work when I attempted to install JDK 5. There was no window available to choose the default or custom during the installation. Should there have been?
There is a long thread in this forum about this problem with SDK 1.4. It is located at,
Java Forums - Windows Installer error

Is there anyway to get around this install problem with JDK 5? I am trying to learn JAVA coding and I need to have the JDK on the computer as it is the only place I can install it and test code.
Thanks in advance for any and all help anyone can give me on this.
