Install 7 problem: 'No VTOC' message, no CD-ROM
807559Apr 11 2000 — edited May 30 2001I am trying to install Solaris 7 on a Pentium machine, and haven't succeeded in even getting Solaris to boot from the CD-ROM/diskette. My Gateway G6-266 has Win95 and all the files I need to maintain on an IDE Primary Master hard drive, and I would like to install Solaris on the second (newly installed) IDE Primary Slave hard drive if possible (the master drive only has 1 GB to spare). I have a single partition for each drive. When I attempt to bring up Solaris 7 using the Device Configuration Assistant, I get the following message: "error message from mount: /pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@0/cmdk@1,0:a: can't open - no VTOC".
The second drive appears to be correctly formatted (10 GB, using FAT32), and is recognized by the BIOS. The CD-ROM is installed as the Secondary Master but does not appear in the Device Configuration list of devices. Do I need to install the VTOC on my second disk drive or get the CD-ROM drive to appear and select it? The exact model number of my CD is not on the hardware list, but the previous version was; how could I determine if my problems stem from this?
Thanks in advance!
