Inserting dates in B.C. giving Problem

SQL> insert into emp (empno, hiredate)
2 values(7900,to_date('31-JAN-3000','DD-MON-YYYY B.C.'));

ERROR at line 2:
ORA-01840: input value not long enough for date format
