inserting chinese characters

Hello All,
Our 10g db is not yet utf complient. But we have a table which has NCHAR column. The NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET parameter is set to AL16UTF16.
When I select on the above mentioned tables , I can see chinese characters. But When i try to insert using a insert script, I see junk in the table. What is going on here?
