index tablespace is full

hi guys,

on a production database , the total isze of the datafiles is about 50 gb
we have a tablespace for indexes that are rebuilt daily,
the size of that tablespace's datafiles combined is 12 gb,
now we've been using that db for 6 months now & the index tablespace is full
my question is why does that happen when the indexes are rebuilt daily, & do i have to drop the datafiles in that tablespace & recreate them or is there some other solution to purge the data in the tablespace?
