Improvement Suggestion: Implementing Full Dark Theme in SQL Developer

I would like to suggest implementing a full dark theme across SQL Developer. While there is already a dark theme option for the code editing interface, other interface elements such as menus, toolbars, results windows, and side panels still use the light theme, which can cause visual discomfort, especially for those who spend long hours working with the tool.

A unified dark theme across the entire development environment can improve the user experience by providing a more pleasant visual experience and reducing eye strain, especially in low-light environments. Additionally, a full dark theme has been a popular request among developers and has been adopted by many modern development tools.

You have just described a great reason to switch over to our SQL Developer extension for VS Code.

@thatjeffsmith-oracle , SQL Developer is an essential tool for many companies and database professionals, but the lack of a complete dark theme really impacts the experience, especially for those who spend hours using the tool.

The suggestion to use VS Code with an SQL extension might work for some, but it doesn’t solve the core problem. SQL Developer needs to offer a complete dark theme natively. After all, many companies already standardize the use of this tool, and switching just because of a visual limitation isn’t a viable option.

Here are a few reasons why this is necessary:

Corporate Standardization – SQL Developer is already widely used in companies, and switching tools isn’t simple. Oracle should update the tool to meet this demand directly.

Less Visual Fatigue – Working with a light interface for long periods can be uncomfortable, especially in low-light environments. A dark theme would help reduce eye strain.

Market Trend – Almost all modern development tools already offer complete dark themes. SQL Developer should follow this trend to stay relevant.

Interface Consistency – Currently, only the code editor has a dark theme, while menus and other elements remain light, creating an uncomfortable contrast. A complete dark theme would bring a more uniform experience.

Community Request – This has been a recurring request from many users. Oracle should listen to the feedback and implement this feature, which would be a great improvement for everyone.

The solution isn’t to switch tools, but rather for Oracle to add a complete dark theme in SQL Developer. This would make it more comfortable to use and help improve productivity day-to-day.

SQL Developer is being replaced by our VS Code Extension, as soon as we have moved all the features over. You can download and use it, today.

I agree with you and your points, all valid.

We agree, and the best way to make this happen, is re-build SQL Developer from scratch, as a VS Code extension.

The current SQL Developer will not be receiving any new features or enhancements, only bug fixes.
