import/export/save java files instead of JWS

Hi. Here are my Newbie questions.

1) Is there a way to save source files (like Java or properties files) on the file system instead of saving all the project related files in a jws file?

I'd like to be able to access a .java file without opening Jdeveloper -- specifically so that I can check source into a repository. My project has version control and we don't want to check JWS files into the repository.

2) How can one connect to Merant Version Management through JDeveloper?

I'll appreciate any help.
