Impact assessment for Solaris 10 Update 9 to Update 11 Upgrade : (1) Just Patching: Through Patch Bu

Hello Team,

I am in process to upgrade my Dev & Test SPARC Solaris 10 update 9 ldm VMs(Servers) to Solaris 10 Update 11

In Dev & Test environment I don't see all the per-requisites available such as extra disks etc to upgrade using a Live Upgrade utility. [ My OS : Oracle Solaris 10 9/10 s10s_u9wos_14a SPARC ]

I'm considering both the options for an upgrade as follows: (1) Just Patching: Through Patch Bundle released for SPARC Solaris 10 1/13 OR  (2) Upgrade: Through Solaris 10 1/13 ISO image form ldom console

Concerns

------------

  • In this 2 options I wanted to know what is difference in terms of new features / functions / utilities availability and risks involved post options (1) & (2) ?
  • In PRODUCTION environment, servers are might capable for "Live Upgrade" utility to use for a said upgrade but I have to select an approach by which I will be able to achieve the same in both DEV/TEST & PROD environments.
  • Is there any delta in terms of patches included in both (1) Patch Bundle for SPARC Operating Systems for Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 & (2) ISO image for Solaris 10 1/13 patches ?
  • Can I still use the "Live Upgrade" tool for (1) Just Patching OR (2) OS Upgrade ? I have a plan to upgrade Oracle SOA 10g to next release, Oracle Apps Server 10g to next release & Oracle RDBMS 11g to 12c post OS patching / Upgrade activity --> In this case which option [ (1) Just Patching OR (2) OS Upgrade]  will suit me to go with error free systems post upgrade to achieve the same in my both DEV/TEST & PROD environments ??
  • Complete end to end steps to achieve OS Patching / Upgrade

Please let me know in case any other information required from my end.
