Immediate vs. Batch mode still recommended for production web application?

Batch mode would be preferable for out Internet application to reduce network round trips. However, this article recommends using Immediate mode for production until further work is completed on making the batch mode scalable.

This article was written in 2004, so I was wondering if the work on Batch mode is completed and if it would be recommended for a high-volume Internet-facing web application now over the Immediate mode?
