identifying candidate disks for ASM diskgroup

EdStevensNov 18 2010 — edited Jan 3 2011
This may be more of a linux question but it starts with Oracle

I'm running Oracle 10.2.0.4 EE on Oracle Linux 5 under VMworkstation on my XP laptop. Am just now starting to play around with ASM. I have successfully created an ASM instance, but have not defined any diskgroups. Using dbca it doesn't discover any disks with with to create a diskgroup. ASM_DISKSTRING is set to null. This is where I suspect it actually gets into linux admin and off the edge of what I know about that. I'm not sure how to identify a "disk" in this environment. Or how to create a "disk" to be identified to be used. I am comfortable with using vm tools to share a directory from the XP machine, and mount that as a FS under /mnt/hgfs.
