New to Java

I have experience in Web-Site, Markeiting (SEO), XHTML, CSS, PHP&MYSQL - Yesteday I said to myself, I need to make a carrer out of this, I love Computer Coding - I want to Write Applications for Corporations, Like your cable companies TV Menu Bar, what is that made in?

Anywyas, I bought a Java book, and I'm learning - Before I decide to make it my carrer and go for the Certificate then the School and Developers Degree at SUN Java, I'd like to know..

With Java (and java addon's)
Create Electronic Menus for TV's, Phones, IPHONE APPS, Etc...
Develope Applications for Enterprise Use - Does Java allow you to program only for internet or can you make your own software with a .exe?

Is there a Better Language out there for me to pursue?

I'm lost, trying to find a path.... Any help would really be appreacited - I'm an accelerated learner, and I self-teach myself everything. I will be going to Classes for my Final Code Carrer Path though.
