I can not run or compile a program in java?

I am just getting started. I recently downloaded J2SE 1.4.2 Documentation (j2sdk-1_4_2-doc.zip, 32.80 MB. Everything was downloaded fine. I am trying to run the simple "HelloWorldApp" I received the error message that Windows cannot find the Java compiler, javac. I then preceded to the next step search C:\jdk1.4..

Question how do I locate where, path that Java 2 was installed. How to locate the exact path may help me.
