Hugepages with smaller RAM

user503699Dec 18 2013 — edited Jan 2 2014

Hello,

I am trying to understand whether it would help/hinder/doesn't matter whether HugePges are configured on machines with small-sized RAM i.e. 4-6 GB.

I am assuming that this would be a 64-bit machine/OS and would be used to host oracle database.

I have read quite a few blog entries by the experts like Kevin Closson, Riyaj etc. and also some notes on My Oracle Support but am feeling bit lost understanding HOW and WHAT problems hugepages solve.

All of them appear to talk about how enabling Hugepages helps when 64-bit machines/OS have more than 8 GB RAM available.

But would it be worth considering using HugePages on machines with, say 4-6 GB RAM?

I have to admit I am, at most, a newbie when it comes to OS/linux/memory allocation concepts so it is possible that I have missed some crucial concept from those excellent blog posts and support notes.

I would be grateful if somebody can help me find and understand the answer.

Thanks in advance.
