How to use Apache jakarta-poi?

I want to use the POI api for my project. But there is no documentation regarding how to setup the environment before using the api.

I tried the "how-to" on the web site, I can not even compile the "HSSF.java". (This is an example file available with the source code of POI).

Any one have any ideas?
