How to uninstall old JRE-traces
843798Jan 17 2006 — edited Jul 3 2007Hi,
I have some considerable problems with an application what uses Java. That's why I checked the Java installation on my computer (Windows XP SP2).
I determined the following: Add/Remove Programs of the Control Panel shows ONLY J2SE 5 Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6.
The menu entry Extras/Internet Options/Advanced shows Java 2 v.1.4.2_05.
The Java icon in the Control Panel shows Java 2 Platform Standard Edition Version 1.5.0 (Build 1.5.0_06-b05).
Futhermore I have several Java plugins in my Internet Explorer Add Ons.
I think this is an incorrect installation. This might be because I had trouble as it was decscribed in many postings in this forum and I solved these problems with the Windows Install Clean Up utility as it was described in this forum too.
Note that J2SE 5 Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 is the only Java instance in the Add/Remove Programs of the Control Panel.
I looked for old Runtimes on the Sun download page but Sun seems only to offer the very last version. If there would be old versions I could try to reinstall them and then uninstall them again and hope that this uninstall will remove the old version completely.
Another way would be to know all items of an installaion of a Java version. Microsoft offers in its Knowledge Base several descriptions, what components consist of what files and registry entries. At the moment I found only this very general Sun document relating to an uninstallation of the JRE 1.5.0: http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010800.xml. But this procedure requires an item in Add/Remove Programs. I don't want to change Registry entries without precise information.
Of course I searched already this forum but I only found the following unanswered postings: "Java Forums - How to completely remove Java?" (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=32&threadID=400557) and "Uninstalling JRE leaves the" (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=699559&tstart=0). The last is recent but very cryptic.
Is there perhaps a tool what removes all instances of Java? I think there should be Sun documents or even White Papers concerning this problem but I didn't find them yet.
Thanks in advance.
