How to test RAC failover working?

534454Oct 10 2008 — edited Oct 15 2008
Hi Gurus,

I need some recommendations on how to test a failover in 4 node RAC Cluster. (10.2.0.3 RHEL4u6), or I should say the best way to test the failover.

Lets say, on the client machine, I have a sqlplus sessions open which is connected to instance4. On Node4,server side, if I issue "shutdown abort" as sysdba, sqlplus session which is connected to node4 should now be connected to any of the surviving nodes. So far this has worked. But is it a good way or recommended way of testing the failover?

Other DBA suggested that we should turn off the port on the switch where private interconnect are connected? I am bit skeptical in doing that as I think it might bring the cluster down. Is my assumption correct?

Also, what are your recommendations/suggestions on taking down public/private vips? Can this be used to test a failover?

Recommendations are welcome.

Thank you,

MM
