How to take $ORACLE_HOME back for patch

How to take $ORACLE_HOME back for patch.

OS=SUN

I tried tar -cvf tar.file /oracle/db then I restore with tar -xvf tar.file /oracle/db but it did not work and I asm still seeing old file names.
