How to subtract seconds from a given time -PL SQL

Suppose select to_CHAR( SYSDATE, 'YYYY-MON-DD HH24:MI:SS') from dual gives
2009-JUL-01 20:37:59
I need to get 1 second less than this time.

Please help.
