how to simulate a 'network cable unplug' for VM?

How to simulate a 'network cable unplug' for VM? It is important for me to test HA function of software.

I do not want use " xm network-detach " since it is to remove interface from VM.

I do not want use "ip link" commands inside of VM, I need to do it external from VM.

This is same question as this thread: https://community.oracle.com/message/10799873#10799873 but no answer found.
