How to setup real hostname and abstract hostname

Rohit PatankarOct 5 2016 — edited Oct 7 2016

Hi,

I have implemented OVM 3.4.1 setup and will be creating Linux Virtual machine.

My application product say "perform installation using Abstract hostname, so IP address change in future will not have any impact. But they also says don't use real hostname".

Can someone help me to know the difference between real hostname, abstract hostname,  and Alias name (cname).

How and where we can setup different type of hostname.

Do we specify in the /etc/hosts file or DNS.

Can same IP address can have multiple hostname name and where we can define.

As of now, I have 1 IP address and 1 Hostname which was used during OS installation. Now if I need to add abstract hostname and Alias name. How to achieve this.

Regards,

Rohit
