how to set fixed length of apex_item.display_and save

Hi,
I have to set a fixed length of some apex_item.display_and_save column.
I set in column definition the column width to 10 and later to 600, nothing changes,
Element width the same
element attribute to style=width:80px nothing changes
Where can I change the display length?

Please help me, it is urgent.
