how to set default jre

I had previously installed a java 1.4 SDK and JRE that worked fine. Today I installed an Oracle client that included a JRE 1.3 and it has set this as the default, because when I just run "java -version" it now reports "1.3.1_01". How do I adjust this so it will again use the 1.4 version?
