How to remove disk from ASM Diskgroup in unmounted state

I added a disk to an existing ASM diskgroup, but the diskgroup immediately dismounted, and I cannot remount. Obviously it is the new disk causing an issue here.

Considering the contents of the new disk are probably empty, how do you remove a disk from an unmounted diskgroup?

Running on RHEL4 and Oracle DB 11.2.0.3
