How to recover root lost password for a guest linux system

Hello:
I don't remember the password for the 'root' user on a guest OEL system running under an Oracle VM.
I've tested to set extra = '1' on the cfg file and reboot, but the system reboots at level 3.
.
Any idea on what I can do to recover / change the root password?
