How to Recompile the public synonym with out drop the synonym

Hi,
i am using 10g database and 8i client....
i want to recompile the public synonym. but its showing insufficient priviliges.
but i am trying with own schema only so i thought it should allow to recompile.
can anybody help me for this problem
