How to maintain Row num sequential order when report is sorted by another column.

I have a report with a rownum column that when sorted the numbers gets mixed. Is there a way to keep the new sort order but have the rownum col in seq order?
Can a column exist external to the report that will not be affected then the report is sorted?
Sorted by Row
Sorted by col B, row gets messed up.
