How to know which SRID to use and how to set it?

Hello,
i´ve received from a client a set of .shp files which i have migrated and loaded into Oracle 10g. Their metadata set X and Y coordinates. Which SRID shall i use? We´re located in south america.

After that, how do i set the srid and into which tables so i can create the spatial index?
