How to insert an XML into a PDF?

Hi,
I'm looking for a way to put some XML data into a PDF, obviously in java code. After that I also need to reverse the process and extract the XML metadata from the PDF.

I've take a look to Adobe XMP, but I don't understand if it is what I need.

Anyone can help me?
