How to format display as text item?

I have an item (I1) on my page (P1) that is set to display as “Display as Text (escape special characters, does not save state”. This item’s content shows up as plain “50” on P1. I have another page (P2), created as a form on the same table, and the I1 item source is configured with this Format Mask: FML999G999G999G999G990D00.

The I1 content on P2 is nicely formatted to *$50.00*. What should I do in order to have I1 shown on P1 as “$50.00” instead of current “50”?
