How to create a Word doc from within an Apex page ?

Am newbie to Apex and am using 4.0.1 on Vista laptop running Oracle XE.

Basically have got requirement to generate a Word doc (letter akin to a Word mail merge) from a button press on Apex page which will gather data from the form and fill in values in approp place in Word doc.

Is this even possible with Apex ? Our site does not have BI Publisher or any fancy means of printing from Apex ..

Any help greatfully appreciated as always !

P.S Is it just me or does printing in Apex feel like poor relation .. it feels like it can now do so much e.g Interactvive Reports, Dynamic Actions, Plugins, Google Maps, AJAX .. etc but something as basic as printing gets slight mention / attention ?!?
